The Programme for Belize is a Belizean, non-profit organization,
established in 1988, to promote conservation of the natural
heritage of Belize and wise use of its natural resources.
The Rio Bravo is its flagship project where Programme for
Belize seeks to demonstrate practical applications of its
principles focused on linking conservation of tropical forest
with the development of sustainable land uses which leave
the forest and its environmental values intact. On the Rio
Bravo, Programme for Belize implements several programs:
scientific research, environmental education, professional
training and promotes environmental awareness amongst visitors.
Programme
for Belize is committed to the goal of earning sufficient
revenue from its economic activities to support the conservation
of the RBCMA. To this end, PFB has carried out major research
on the land and its resources to arrive at sustainable development
plans which include: ecotourism, sustainable timber extraction,
carbon sequestration, agroforestry and extraction of non-timber
products such as chicle, thatch and palm.

Programme
for Belize's ecotourism program has been in operation since
1992. The main focus of tourism on the Rio Bravo is linking
environmental education with visitation. Programme for Belize's
vision is to provide visitors with an enlightening, yet
low impact, experience in the rainforest. Education and
interpretation are therefore central elements of the Rio
Bravo forest experience.
Programme
for Belize has established two field stations which have
evolved as sites of visitation in addition to serving as
research centers. Programme for Belize's Hill Bank Field
Station and La Milpa Field Station offer a range of unique
forest experiences that weave natural history, archaeology,
Belizean culture and cutting-edge research into an unparalleled
eco-adventure. The Rio Bravo forest experience is brought
to life by Programme for Belize's team of highly trained
and dedicated Belizean naturalists, scientists and service
personnel. Visitors to the Rio Bravo are sure to leave with
a deepened understanding of the real issues surrounding
conservation of the world's tropical forests.

To
effectively manage, promote and market tourism on the Rio
Bravo, Programme for Belize established a Tourism Development
Unit (TDU), a full fledge business operation housed within
the organization. The TDU functions as an in-bound tour
operator, offering receptive services, and having the capacity
to design and conduct tours to both field stations on the
Rio Bravo and elsewhere in Belize. The expertise which the
TDU has amassed, over its seven years of operation, equips
it to design innovative travel products for a varied clientele,
ranging from V.I.P. groups and independent travelers to
student groups.
All
profits from Programme for Belize's tourism operation are
redirected into the conservation of the Rio Bravo. Hence,
by visiting the Rio Bravo you can contribute directly to
the conservation, protection and management of a site of
tremendous environmental importance.
